Which drain is blocked?

Where the water backs up gives a good clue to where the clog is.

  • One fixture is slow (a kitchen sink, a bathroom sink or a tub): the clog is usually in that fixture’s trap or the short pipe behind it.
  • Several fixtures are slow at once, or a toilet gurgles when the washer drains: the blockage is probably further down, in a shared branch line or the main drain. A gurgle can also mean a blocked vent.
  • Water comes up through the basement floor drain, or the lowest toilet or tub fills when you run water upstairs: the main drain or the sewer line is probably blocked. Stop using water in the house, keep away from the sewage water, and call us. This is the one that floods basements.

What usually causes the clog

  • Kitchen sinks: grease and food scraps. Grease poured down hot cools and sticks to the pipe wall, and food builds up on it.
  • Bathroom sinks and tubs: hair and soap.
  • Toilets: wipes (even the ones sold as flushable), paper towels and too much paper at once.
  • Main drains: all of the above, plus tree roots in older clay or cast iron lines, and pipes that have sagged and hold water.

How we clear a drain

We use a drain snake, also called an auger: a steel cable with a cutting head that we feed into the pipe to break up the clog. For a sink, the cable usually goes in where the trap comes off. For a main line, it usually goes in through a cleanout, a capped fitting on the main drain.

A drain that keeps blocking again can have more than a clog in it: a sag, a bad slope, a damaged section or tree roots. A snake alone will not fix those.

Our Google reviews describe drain jobs such as a kitchen sink that had been clogged for a month, a clogged drain in a main bathroom, a laundry sink drain and a backed-up main drain. One customer wrote: “We had a backed up main drain at our house, we called Townhouse Plumbing to get it fixed. They replied right away and had someone come to snake it out.”

Keeping drains clear

  • Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before you wash them, and put the towel in your green organics cart.
  • Use a hair catcher in the tub and the shower.
  • Flush only toilet paper.
  • If a drain starts to slow down, deal with it before it stops.

A drain that is backing up into the house is urgent. Stop using water, stay out of the sewage water, and call an emergency plumber in Barrie. For a slow drain, book drain cleaning in Barrie through our contact page.

Drain cleaning questions

How do I know if the clog is in one fixture or in the main drain?

If one fixture is slow, the clog is usually in that fixture's trap or the short pipe behind it. If several fixtures are slow at once, or a toilet gurgles when the washer drains, the blockage is probably in a shared branch line or the main drain. If water comes up through the basement floor drain, or the lowest toilet fills when you run water upstairs, the main drain or the sewer line is probably blocked. How do you clear a blocked drain?

Why does my drain keep blocking again?

A drain that keeps blocking can have more than a clog in it: a sag, a bad slope, a damaged section or tree roots. A snake alone will not fix those. We explain what we found before we start any further work.

What should I keep out of the drains?

Grease and food scraps in the kitchen: wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before you wash them. Hair and soap in the tub and the shower: use a hair catcher. In the toilet, flush only toilet paper. Wipes, even the ones sold as flushable, and paper towels block toilets.

Is a backed-up drain an emergency?

Yes, if it is backing up into the house. Stop using water, stay out of the sewage water, and call us. We are open 24 hours. A slow drain that still empties can be booked for a regular visit.
